Legacy Park Outdoor Game Court

Legacy Park added an outdoor game court to a San Antonio neighborhood before the 2018 NCAA Men’s Final Four. The project also included a soccer field and walking path. Together, these spaces gave students and neighbors more ways to stay active.

A Community Investment in San Antonio

The San Antonio Sports School Park Program developed Legacy Park through a $250,000 partnership. Partners included the City of San Antonio, the NCAA, San Antonio Sports, and Unilever, the company behind Dove Men+Care.

At the time, Jenny Carnes led the San Antonio Local Organizing Committee. She explained that the city’s NCAA partnership extended beyond hosting championships. In addition, both organizations shared a commitment to supporting the community.

As a result, the planning team connected its legacy projects with existing San Antonio Sports programs. Their goal was to address community needs and leave lasting benefits after the tournament.

An Outdoor Game Court for Active Play

The court features a modular sports surface designed for active play. Its layout includes markings for basketball, hopscotch, and four square. In addition, the space accommodates activities such as futsal, pickleball, tennis, and jump rope.

Rather than limiting the space to one activity, this design supports several ways to play. For example, students can enjoy basketball or playground games on the same surface. Meanwhile, the nearby soccer field and walking path provide other exercise options.

A Shared Space for Students and Neighbors

The park plan gave Higgs Carter King Charter School students access during school hours. After school and on weekends, it opened the amenities to the surrounding community.

In this way, Legacy Park offered a shared place for exercise, recreation, and time with family and friends. Moreover, the project connected a major sporting event with a lasting neighborhood investment.
